What competencies does the graduate have? In addition to studies in mathematical and natural sciences, a student will acquire competencies and skills related to construction, structural engineering, project management, and financial thinking. The major part of studies consists of construction engineering and structural design. Improving energy efficiency and using business information modeling (BIM) in managing the lifecycle of the built environment are important future challenges to be resolved. Acknowledging sustainable development is also a substantial part of the construction profession now and in the future. What kind of learning methods are used in the programme? Studies are practical-oriented and meet the skills requirements derived from the working life. Theoretical learning is enhanced and put into practice through laboratory exercises and in authentic construction sites. Study methods include class-based learning, team and project work, and online learning. Studies include elective study modules, work placement, and final thesis. Work placement periods enable a student to meet personal learning objectives according to an area of interest in the field. The student can also undertake student exchange as part of the degree studies. What kind of career opportunities does the graduate have? The construction field offers a variety of career opportunities in new construction, renovation, planning, design, and sales and product development. One main area of work is also in using and maintenance of the real estate. In the construction branch, graduates work for example in designing and planning residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, work management of construction, maintenance, and renovation. Graduates are also employed by engineering and planning offices, construction companies, the building industry, and the public sector. Working in property real estate maintenance companies is also increasing as one possible career option in the field.
