Die Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, kurz HU Berlin, wurde 1809 vom preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm III. als Universität zu Berlin gegründet und nahm im Jahr 1810 den Lehrbetrieb auf. Von 1828 bis 1945 trug sie zu Ehren ihres Gründers den Namen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin. 1949 wurde die größte und älteste Hochschule in Berlin nach den Universalgelehrten Wilhelm und Alexander von Humboldt benannt.
